Bob: “Eighteen eighty-two is when my great-great-great Grandpa George and Grandma Annie came over from Ontario. They started in Scotland, but came through Ontario. It was after the Great Fire that they came here. We both were raised in the country, around animals, around the fair. I guess, without even talking about it, we thought that it was important to keep going with our own kids. It turns out they like it pretty well.”
What are the benefits of raising your kids in a rural community, like Cass City? Sue: “Safety, for sure. Family. Building relationships with the people that you can see constantly. There are things, especially with the boys having special needs, in bigger communities I know there are places where there are Autism specialty clinics, Autism play groups, Autism gymnastics, and all these special things that might be great to have. But we are choosing this type of place. I like being in a small town. I like relationships with people. Family is the number one thing.” Bob: “Living out here works well for us.” Sue: “The fact that the kids have room to just do all this is big. It would be great if we could have Elias in physical therapy, and a lot more and really specialized things. Or he can run around with pigs and goats, and get home physical therapy–and get the natural way. That’s more of my view of homeschooling–just let them learn the natural way, by experiencing things.”
