The Wallace brothers were born and raised in Cass City. I caught up with them at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the cemetery.
Dick: Back in Scouting, the whole troop would camp out at the gravel pit, south of Cass City, and then we would come out here on Memorial Day and put the flags out. Then, we’d come back later and march out to the cemetery as the Boy Scout Troop. But Jim is much older than I am–he’s 3 years older. Jim: I was Patrol Leader at that time. We marched up to where the Pinney Bank was, and after we’d finished putting the flags out, we went out in patrols to get ready to go down to the gravel pit, where we were going to have breakfast and do all that sort of stuff. This is still about 6:30 in the morning. We have two patrols that are set up, and everyone is at attention. This little dog comes running by, trotting, and he lifts his leg, and [goes] all down the side of my leg. I’m trying to be serious about this, being the Senior Patrol Leader. Well, everyone started laughing at me. That I’ll remember forever!
