What is it like for you being a Jewish family in a mostly non-Jewish community?
Abraham: “It’s different.” Sam: “There’s hardly anyone in our school that is Jewish.” Abraham: “Our mom comes in [to our classes] and she…” Sam: “…tells everybody about Hanukkah.” Abraham: “And gives everybody dreidels and chocolate.” Debby: ” It’s a job. I feel like it’s our responsibility to inform their kids, everybody that they’re going with, that we’re all different. Every single person here is different for some reason. Most of the kids at their school, at this point, know what Judaism is. A lot of the teachers do. Some of the teachers look forward to me coming in, they want to hear about it. But it’s a challenge for me with the boys, too, because it means I really have to instill things in them myself. I’m seeing as they get older that they’re leaning more towards Jewish things than Christian things, that obviously there’s some information sinking in.”
